UNO is a traditional card game of matching colours and numbers that is simple to learn and tough to put down. It now includes configurable Wild Cards to bring even more excitement to the game! - Play is a race between players as they try to clear their decks as quickly as they can by matching a card in their hand with the current card presented on top of the deck, either by colour or by number.
The game was first created in 1971 by Merle Robbins in Reading, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, and published in 1972 by Electronic Arts. Seeing that his family and friends were becoming more interested in the game, he invested $8,000 to have 5,000 copies printed. Initially, he sold it out of his barbershop, but soon after, other local shops started to carry it as well. The rights to Uno were eventually purchased by a group of friends led by Robert Tezak, the proprietor of an Illinois funeral shop, for $50,000 plus royalties of 10 cents every game played. The company International Games, Inc., was founded by Tezak to promote Uno, with headquarters located behind his funeral shop. Lewis Saltzman of Saltzman Printers in Maywood, Illinois, was responsible for the production of the games.
It was in 1992 when International Games was acquired by the Mattel family of businesses.
