Rapunzel is a character from a German fairy tale that was translated into English by the Brothers Grimm and first appeared in their collection of Children's and Household Tales in 1812. The Brothers Grimm's version of the story is based on the fairy tale "Rapunzel," which was written by Friedrich Schulz in 1790. Schulz's version was a translation of Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force's "Persinette," which was written in 1698. Persinette, in turn, was influenced by an earlier Italian story written by Giambattista Basile, "Petrosinella," which was written in 1634.
This story falls under the Aarne–Thompson type 310 classification ("The Maiden in The Tower"). Its storyline has been adapted for usage in other works of fiction as well as ridiculed. The phrase "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair" is perhaps the most famous part of it.
