Disney Pictures published the computer-animated sports comedy Cars in 2006, which was developed by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by John Lasseter and was based on a screenplay by Dan Fogelman, Lasseter, Joe Ranft, Kiel Murray, Phil Lorin, and Jorgen Klubien, as well as a story by Lasseter, Ranft, and Klubien. On May 26, 2006, Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, hosted the world premiere of Cars. The film was released in theatres in the United States on June 9, 2006, to generally positive reviews and commercial success. Cars grossed $462 million worldwide against a $120 million budget, exceeding its $120 million budget. In addition to being nominated for two Academy Awards, it was also nominated for Best Animated Feature, but was defeated by Happy Feet 2. (but won both the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature and the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film). The film was released on DVD on November 7, 2006, and on Blu-ray in 2007. It was also released on VHS in 2006. One Man Band, a short film that followed the film's theatrical and home media releases, was also released in conjunction with the film. In honour of Joe Ranft, the film's co-director and co-writer, who died in a vehicle accident during the film's production, the picture was dedicated to him.
