As a god, Thor appears frequently in the written history of the Germanic peoples, from the Roman occupation of regions of Germania to the Germanic expansions of the Migration Period to his enduring popularity during the Viking Age, when, in the face of Scandinavia's gradual Christianization by the West, emblems of his hammer, Mjölnir, were worn and Norse pagan personal names containing the god's name bear witness to his enduring popularity.
Because of the nature of the Germanic corpus, tales involving Thor are only documented in Old Norse, where Thor is a prominent figure in Norse mythology throughout the ages. The deity appears in a slew of stories from Norse mythology, which was mostly written in Iceland from traditional material originating in Scandinavia. Thor is known by at least fifteen different names in these sources, and he is the spouse of the golden-haired goddess Sif, as well as the lover of the jötunn Járnsaxa. Thor is often characterised as having fiery eyes, red hair, and a red beard. Thor fathered the goddess (and probable valkyrie) rr with Sif; he fathered Magni with Járnsaxa; he fathered Mói with a mother whose name is not known; and he is the stepfather of the god Ullr with a mother whose name is not documented. Thor has multiple brothers, including Baldr, who are all descended from Odin. Besides having two slaves, jálfi and Röskva, Thor also rides in a cart or chariot drawn by two goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr (which he consumes and then resurrects), and he has three residences (Bilskirnir, rheimr, and rvangr), according to the myth. Thor holds the hammer Mjölnir, which he wears with the belt Megingjör and the iron gloves Járngreipr. He also has the staff Grarvölr, which he uses to strike his opponents. In the Norse mythological tradition, Thor's deeds, which include his merciless killing of his enemies and ferocious confrontations with the giant serpent Jörmungandrâ€â€as well as their anticipated mutual deaths during the events of Ragnarökâ€â€are chronicled throughout the literature.
