Superman is a fictional superhero who appears in comic books published by DC Comics in the United States. The character was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, and made his first appearance in the comic book Action Comics #1 in 1962. (cover-dated June 1938 and published April 18, 1938). Many other forms of media have been used to adapt Superman's story. These include radio serials and novels, as well as films, television shows, and stage productions.
Superman was given the name Kal-El when he was born on the fictitious planet Krypton. His parents sent him to Earth in a tiny spacecraft only minutes before Krypton was destroyed by a natural catastrophe when he was a toddler. His spacecraft landed in the American countryside, close to the fictitious hamlet of Smallville, where he was welcomed. He was discovered and adopted by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent, who called him Clark Kent after the fictional character of the same name. Clark gained a variety of superhuman talents, including extraordinary strength and impenetrable skin, during the course of his life. His adoptive parents encouraged him to utilise his gifts for the greater good, and he chose to combat crime as a result of their advice. For the sake of protecting his personal life, he dons a brightly coloured suit and goes under the pseudonym "Superman" while battling crime. Currently, Clark lives in Metropolis, a fictitious American metropolis where he is employed as a journalist for the Daily Planet publication. A few of Superman's supporting characters include his love interest and fellow journalist Lois Lane, Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen, and Daily Planet editor in chief Perry White. Some of Superman's antagonists include General Zod and Lex Luthor, who is also his archenemy.
