Developed by Japanese game creators Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, The Legend of Zelda is a high fantasy action-adventure video game series set in a fantastical world. Although most of its portable editions and re-releases have been contracted out to Capcom, Vanpool, and Grezzo, Nintendo is the primary company responsible for the game's development and publication. The gameplay combines features of action role-playing games with elements of action-adventure games.
The series follows the adventures of Link, a brave young Hylian man with elf-like ears, and Princess Zelda, a magical princess who is the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia. Together, they battle Ganon, an evil warlord turned demon king, in an effort to save the magical land of Hyrule from destruction. Ganon is the primary antagonist of the series. Ganon intends to utilise the Triforce, a holy artefact that was abandoned by the three goddesses who were responsible for the creation of Hyrule, in order to reshape the world in accordance with his own twisted vision. If someone with a heart that lacks a balance of the three virtues of Power, Courage, and Wisdom attempts to touch the Triforce, it will split into three triangles and bond with three people whose hearts embody the required virtue. However, if someone with a heart that does possess a balance of the three virtues of Power, Courage, and Wisdom gathers the power of the Triforce together, it can grant any wish that its user desires.
In spite of the fact that their identities and histories change from game to game, the various incarnations of Link and Princess Zelda share many characteristics. For example, Link is frequently associated with the colour green and has a dominant left hand, and Princess Zelda is frequently a member of the royal family. In spite of the fact that the struggle with Ganon serves as the series' central conflict, several of the games have included various locations and adversaries, and Link has either been dispatched to these other places in their time of need or has travelled there himself.
Since the release of the first Legend of Zelda game in 1986, the series has grown to encompass 19 instalments across all of Nintendo's main gaming systems, in addition to a variety of spin-offs and other related games. Since 1989, an American animated television series based on the games has shown, while individual manga adaptations commissioned by Nintendo have been created in Japan since 1997, according to the company's website. The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo's most well-known and popular series, and some of its instalments are regarded to be among the best video games ever created.
