Call of Duty is a first-person shooter video game series developed by Activision and distributed by Electronic Arts. It began with a concentration on World War II-themed games when it initially launched in 2003. Game settings have ranged from the Cold War to future planets to outer space, with the series having seen games set throughout various periods of history. Infinity Ward was the first studio to work on the games, and later Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games joined in on the fun. Other developers created a number of spin-offs and portable games based on the original game. The most current game, Call of Duty: Vanguard, was published on November 5, 2021, making it the most recent in the series.
It was initially intended for a World War II scenario; Infinity Ward created the first (2003) and second (2005) entries in the series, while Treyarch created the third (2007) title (2006). Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) offered a new, contemporary setting and proved to be a watershed moment in the series' history, spawning the Modern Warfare sub-series as a result of this. The game's history also had a role in the development of a remastered edition, which was published in 2016. Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Modern Warfare 3 (2011) were also developed as entries in the series. Modern Warfare, the rebooted version of the sub-series, premiered in 2019. Additionally, Infinity Ward has worked on two games outside of the Modern Warfare series: Ghosts (2013) and Infinite Warfare (both released in 2013). (2016). One last World War II-themed game was released by Treyarch in 2008, titled World at War, before releasing Black Ops (2010) and subsequently establishing the Black Ops sub-series. Four further entries were created: Black Ops II (2012), Black Ops III (2015), Black Ops 4 (2018), and Cold War (2020), the latter in collaboration with Raven Software. Sledgehammer Games, which worked on Modern Warfare 3 as a co-developer, has also worked on three other games, including Advanced Warfare (2014), WWII (2017), and Vanguard (2018). (2021).
