If an evil force threatens the city of Paris, two teenage girls, Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, transform into their superhero personas, Ladybug and Cat Noir respectively, with the help of magical jewels known as the Miraculous. The series is set in modern-day Paris and revolves around their adventures as Ladybug and Cat Noir, respectively. Marina and Adrien struggle with their affections for one other over the course of the novel, since they are unaware of each other's hidden identities  Marinette is in love with Adrien but not Cat Noir, while Adrien is in love with Ladybug but not Marinette.

Master Fu, the Guardian of the Miraculous, enables Ladybug to borrow new Miraculouses as Hawk Moth's foes get more difficult to defeat, allowing her to enlist her fellow classmates and friends to become superheroes.

Marinette and Adrien also meet musician Luka Couffaine and fencer Kagami Tsurugi, with whom they develop feelings for and which further complicates their already complicated romantic relationship.

By the fourth season, Marinette has been promoted to the position of Guardian, and Hawk Moth has fused his Miraculous with the Peacock to become Shadow Moth, which gives him the ability to produce both supervillains and sentimonsters. When Alya Césaire, Marinette's closest friend, finds out about her hidden identity, Marinette begins to favour her and other temporary recruits above Cat Noir.

At the conclusion of the fourth season, Hawk Moth has gained access to virtually all of the Miraculous jewels, with the exception of the Peacock gem, which he loses to Félix Graham de Vanily, Adrien's aunt's son, who is resentful of the Agrestes and has a grudge against them. Ladybug and Cat Noir, who are now again the only two superheroes on the planet, are tasked with bringing the Miraculous back to life one by one.
