Peppa Pig is set in a universe in which all of the characters are animals, and the story focuses on the title girl, her family, and her friends. Each episode has a running time of roughly five minutes. Each of her companions represents a different animal species. Peppa's buddies are her own age, and George, Peppa's younger brother, has friends who are also his own age. Episodes usually revolve on ordinary activities such as going to playgroup, going swimming, visiting with their grandparents, relatives, and friends, going to the playground, and riding their bikes, among other things.

Despite the fact that the characters dress, live in homes, and drive automobiles, they nevertheless exhibit several traits associated with the animals on which they are based. During talks in which they are speaking English, Peppa and her family snort like pigs, while the other animals make their own noises as they chat, with some showing additional qualities, such as the Rabbit family's squeaking sounds and appreciation of carrots. They live in a burrow in a hill, which is equipped with windows and furnished in the same manner as the other homes, but they are the exceptions to the general norm of human-like housing. When the characters are humiliated, they flush, and their lips show a variety of other emotions such as despair, pleasure, impatience, astonishment, and confusion among other things. The primary characters, who are largely mammals, are anthropomorphic, but some of the minor animal characters, such as Tiddles the tortoise, Polly the parrot, and the ducks, are not. With phrases such as "Oh, dear" when something terrible occurs (such as George sobbing) or "Look out!" when a character is doing something dangerous, the series' narrator, John Sparkes, helps to highlight the action and hilarity (such as Peppa riding her bicycle without looking where she is going).
