The majority of the product design and tooling development is carried out in-house. The figurines are hand-painted in China, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Romania, with manufacturing taking place at the company's German headquarters and at production facilities in other countries. Schleich had around 250 workers and an annual sales volume of approximately 80 million Euros in 2006. 

Schleich toys are constructed of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, which is a plastic material that is extensively used in the construction sector for plumbing water lines in both houses and commercial buildings. In addition, they use a softener created by BASF, known as Hexamoll® DINCH®.  In addition to toys, this softener is used in food packaging and in the medical industry, where it is utilised to package blood products and make breathing tubes more comfortable to use.
