In addition to Spirit, the film is also known as Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is a 2002 American animated Western film produced by DreamWorks Animation and released by DreamWorks Pictures. The film is directed by Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook (in their feature-length directorial debuts), and it is based on a script written by John Fusco, who also stars. Spirit is a Kiger Mustang stallion (spoken by Matt Damon via inner dialogue) who is kidnapped by the United States Cavalry during the American Indian Wars; he is liberated by a Native American man called Little Creek who tries to guide him back into the Lakota community, which is the film's setting. The way Spirit and his companion horses interact with one another is different from the way animals are shown in previous animated pictures, which is via non-linguistic noises and body language, much as actual horses do.

After being released in cinemas on May 24, 2002, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron made a total of $122 million on a $80 million budget. A nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards was made for this film. The film also marked the beginning of a computer-animated media franchise, with a Netflix spin-off television series Spirit Riding Free releasing on May 5, 2017, followed by a spin-off of the original film, dubbed Spirit Untamed, which would be released in June of the following year.
