Reverend W. Awdry and Britt Allcroft are responsible for the creation of the children's television series Thomas & Friends, which was first broadcast in the United Kingdom under the name Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends and was later rebranded as Thomas the Tank Engine and Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures!. The show ran for a total of 24 series from 1984 until 2021. The adventures of Thomas, an anthropomorphized steam locomotive on the fictional North Western Railway on the Island of Sodor, and other engines including Edward, Henry, Gordon, and James, Percy, Toby, and several other anthropomorphized locomotives on the North Western Railway work for the Fat Controller who wants his engines to be "really useful engines." The show is based on The Railway Series books written by Awdry and later his son Christopher Awdry.

Shining Time Station, a spin-off series of the original show that debuted on PBS in 1989, was the first time the show was shown in the United States.

As of right now, the rights to the series are held by HIT Entertainment, which is a subsidiary of Mattel. In July of 2002, HIT Entertainment purchased Gullane Entertainment, therefore they now control the rights to the series.

Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, a new 2D-animated series based on the popular Thomas & Friends franchise, was scheduled to make its debut on Cartoon Network on September 13, 2021. At first, everyone thought that it was going to be a continuation of the first series, but Mattel subsequently revealed that it was going to be a whole new series that was completely independent from the first one.
