He is most remembered for his tenure in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he was three-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, the first of which came at the age of 23 years and 9 months, making Nakamura the IWGP Heavyweight Champion with the youngest reign in the history of the organisation. Some of his other accomplishments within the company include winning the 2011 G1 Climax as well as the 2014 New Japan Cup, as well as being the final IWGP Third Belt Champion, the final NWF Heavyweight Champion, and the longest reigning IWGP Intercontinental Champion during his first reign in the company (he formerly held the record for most reigns at five). He is also a founder member and the first head of the Chaos stable, which he helped to establish.
In January 2016, Nakamura became a member of the World Wrestling Entertainment roster. A weird gimmick is unusual in today's WWE wrestling age, with the majority of modern-day wrestlers portraying themselves as everyday individuals. Nakamura stands out for having characteristics in line with the exaggerated personalities of the company's Golden Era. Through the use of vivid and uninhibited expression, Nakamura depicts a wildly random and unpredictable mixed martial arts enigma, who is emotionally stimulated by the sound of violins throughout the film. Nakamura first appeared as the persona in previous wrestling organisations where he had been signed before to joining the WWE. Because of his experience in mixed martial arts (MMA), Nakamura's wrestling technique is more than just a gimmick; he has a 3–1 (1) record in the sport.
Prior to making his main roster debut in WWE, Nakamura wrestled in the company's NXT brand, where he won the titles of NXT Champion and NXT Tag Team Champion twice. Nakamura won the 2018 Men's Royal Rumble event in January of that year, and he went on to win the WWE United States Championship twice more. The first time he won the Intercontinental Championship was at Extreme Rules in 2019, which made him just the second wrestler (after Chris Jericho) to hold both the WWE and IWGP Intercontinental Championships at the same time. Aside from being a former WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champion, Nakamura has also worked with Cesaro. Nakamura named himself King Nakamura from July 2021 until October of the same year owing to the fact that he was in possession of the King of the Ring crown, despite the fact that he never won the competition.
